Ruby falls

In 1928, Ruby Falls was discovered by a man named Leo Lambert during a construction project where an elevator was being installed to the Lookout Mountain Cave. They were named after the explorer’s wife. The falls are 145 feet in height, but what makes them stand out is that they are located underground. They are located in the Lookout Mountains, which are close to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Interestingly, the falls are actually located below the cave to which the elevator was being installed. The two landmarks do share the same faultline in the limestone shelf.

The falls flow into a landing pool which flows into the Tennessee River.

Both Lookout Mountain Cave and Ruby Falls have attained National Historic Landmark designation, and share visitors with Rock City, a nearby attraction also located in the Lookout Mountains. The falls became open to the public ten years after their discovery in 1938.
