Ludwig Wittgenstein was born in Vienna Austria in 1889 with the given name of Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein. He was the youngest of eight children. He was born of Jewish parents but he was raised to be a Catholic. He grew up in a very intellectual and artistic family He was not a prodigy in any one musical instrument but he did have a perfect pitch for music. Music was important to his for his entire lifetime. He studied mathematics and mechanical engineering in college. He is considered one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century.

Philosophical investigation

Wittgenstein’s best known work was called The Philosophical Investigation. The basic claims of this book involve language. The book dealt with what Wittgenstein called language games. He believed that language could be used in coping with everyday problems and language worked well in this context. But, language was created was created in order to go beyond the scope of everyday life.
