Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger is a fictional character in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. She was born on September 19, 1979 and is a student at the Hogworts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. She is a close friend of Harry Potter, Ron and Ginny Weasley. She is an important character and partners in most of the adventures.

Background

Hermione is of muggle parentage (non – magical people). Both her parents are dentists and she is their only child. Ssshe is desscribed as having “lots of bushy brown hair and rather large front teeth”. When she dresses up for the Yule Ball and uses Sleekeazy's Hair Potion to set her hair in a chignon, both Harry and Ron are astonished by her beauty. Her name is pronounced as “her-my-oh-nee” as cunningly explained in the fourth book.

Personality

Hermione has a moderating influence on Ron and Harry. She sometimes acts like the “mother hen”. She is an extremely intelligent girl, the best student of her year and deifinately one of the best in the school. She tends to be a little bossy and fussy, especially when it comes to studies and homwork.

Harry, Ron and Neville Longbottom rely on her for academic help. She dutifully take notes in all the classes and lends them out to Harry and Ron before examinations. She is very sincere with her homework and always does more than what has been asked for. She received ‘Outstanding’ grades in OWL in all her subjects except in ‘Defense agaist the Dark Arts’ where she received an ‘Exceeds Expectations’ grade.

In the books

In ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ Hermione first appears and is depicted as a “know – it – all” and “goody two shoes”. She is rescued from a Troll by Harry and Ron, which marks the beginning of their friendship. She helps Harry in finding the Philosopher’s stone.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’, Hermione has a smaller role than the first book. She performs an important and complex task of brewing Polyjuice Potion for the trio. She also uncovers the true identity of the basilisk in the chambers.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban’, Hermione distances herself from the friends mainly because of her immense work load. She needs to use a Time – Turner to attend all her classes. She also reports Harry’ gift of the Firebolt to Professor McGonagall who confiscates it, causing Harry and Ron to be very annoyed by her. She assists Hagrid in preparing for his trial for Buckbeak, the Hippogriff. The Time – Turner is used by her and Harry to rescue Sirius Black, Harry’s Godfather, from a terrible fate.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ Hermione establishes a Society for Promotion of Elfish Welfare (called SPEW). She also assists Harry in learning additional spells and charms for the Triwizard Tournament. A love triangle is fabricated between Harry, Victor Krum and Hermione.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ Hermione becomes a Gryffindor House prefect. She continues her efforts for SPEW. She is involved in a battle at the Department of Mysteries where she is injured, but makes a full recovery at the end.

In “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’ Hermione’s flaws and insecurities become evident. She passionately conyinues her schoolwork and when Harry outdoes her at Potions, she becomes bitter towards him considering his methods to be dishonest. At the end of the book, she confirms her loyalty towards Harry.
