European Theatre

From 1980 through 1982, Euro disco was exclusively in Europe and was gaining a good amount of momentum in its unique style. The key areas that saw the biggest impact were Italy and the United Kingdom. Both had a number of bands that were jumping up the charts with the Euro Disco style of music. The one that probably made Euro disco explode in Europe was the Italian band Spagna as they hit the charts in every major European country.

In The United States

Many European producers and songwriters began to notice the hunger in many newer faces in the United States that were trying to revitalize a dying music scene in the United States. Whith disco effectively dead in the eyes of the United States in 1979, much of the influences of the European music industry were influencing the United States. This was a slow process but eventual to transpire.

Blondie and Branigan

The US Euro disco started with two key performers. These performers not only crossed the boundaries of rock, dance, and pop as a whole, but also bringing a style that was sorely needed. Blondie and Laura Branigan are US performers, but both were heavily influenced by the Euro disco style and gained much popularity in presenting their versions to the American public. The introduction of the Euro disco style also made it possible for people such as Giorgio Moroder to introduce bands into the United States such as Berlin and Irene Cara. Thus began what has been called the Second British Invasion.

Euro disco global

In 1984, even more countries were producing Euro disco bands. In Germany, three bands rose to new heights Modern Talking, Fancy, and Sandra. At this point, Euro disco had reached the highest peaks and was the most popular of all music styles in Europe.

This would remain as such until the early 1990’s in Europe as Euro Disco waned and gave way to Eurodance. The United States would follow suite, but also start to show signs of other genres in the making.
