Burger was a shortened and lazy slang term for hamburger, although it has gained a new meaning over the past few decades. With the addition of numerous different types of meats and meat substitutes being used in place of a hamburger patty, the term burger is now used to encompass any sandwich that used a hamburger bun and some form of patty between the bun halves.


Various names of burgers

There are a variety of different burgers out in the world today. Many have been added into the selection since the recent information of excessive beef as not being healthy for the body. The high fat content has been the source of physical ailments and have been the cause of heart issues.


All the variations have the type of patty in the name with burger in the end. Common burgers that are being made today are turkey burger, chicken burger, bison burger, tofu burger, deer burger, and veggie burger or garden burger. Each of the respective meats are ground just as beef is in making hamburger. These are then cooked just the same as hamburger and served in the same manner. Non-meat burgers are pieced together as a patty and cooked in the same fashion as hamburger.


United Kingdom terminology

In the United Kingdom, the patty is typically referred to as the burger. A burger may be served on a plate without the bun and is commonly eaten with a fork and knife. This is usually served with chips and baked beans. This is an alternate means of eating a burger. This is mainly common with the younger crowd.


South Beach Diet variation

The South Beach Diet uses a large piece of lettuce in place of the buns and is eaten in the same way as a normal burger. These were being served in a variety of fast food places, but some have given up on this as of late.
