How to snowboard without catching an edge

From ArticleWorld

Beginners in snowboarding are sometimes advised to avoid catching an edge. They may wonder what it is, and what steps they can take to avoid this. Catching an edge can make you fall, and that can be embarrassing.

How to avoid

Catching an edge is one of the most painful ways to land, your own board takes your legs out from under you. It is in every beginner’s interest to know how to avoid this.

  • Be sure that you know where all the flatter spots are, these are the areas most likely to cause you to catch an edge.
  • Pile on the speed, and don’t push. Be careful.
  • Be sure not to lose speed by turning. Just keep straight, and try not to slide, as this will loose you speed.

If you are putting pressure on your downhill edge, this will cause you to tip. Try and keep your weight centred above the board, and only use mild pressure to ‘guide’ the board.

Be careful when turning. If you dig into the downhill edge, and it catches on the snow before you finish the turn, you will tip over. This can be especially dangerous if there is any ice.

You can also turn slightly on your heel edge to keep from catching, though this may also make you over- balance. The only way to really find out which of these pieces of advice are good for you is to try it out on the slopes.
