A Sport similar to paintball, airsoft is a very popular sport, with the added interest of real-looking guns. Airsoft is an extreme sport, and as such can be dangerous without protection.

How to Play

Airsoft is played with a specialist gun, which uses bb guns to ‘hit’ other players. There are three main types of gun. The spring gun, which launches bb ammunition, using a spring (as the name suggests). On the minus side, this means cocking the gun every time. The electric gun is divided into two types: the automatic electric gun (AEG) and the electric blowback gun (ebb). The former is a quality gun, the latter a cheap imitation, and not worth getting. Electric guns do not need cocking. Lastly, there is the gas gun. This uses gas, and obviously has the potential to ignite.

Spring guns are dependable, electric guns are flashy, and gas is powerful, but doesn’t work in colder weather. If there are already teams playing in your area, you can get together, and play somewhere. You will need an area with a lot of space.

There are different ways to play airsoft.

  • Last Man Standing. Last person on their feet winds. Simple. You can add your own rules: numbers of hits before you’re out, etc, but essentially, the person who is hit the least wins.
  • Objective. Two teams, one attacking, one defending.

Obviously you are not limited to these examples.

Hints

  • Treat your gun as real, and care for it in the same way.
  • Choose your bb missile carefully. The heavier the bb, the more accurate it is, but the shorter distance it will travel. It is not sensible to put less than a .20 in an AEG.
  • The more expensive the gun, the greater it’s firing distance. Guns with very long ranges may be illegal.

Safety

Always wear protective clothes. Goggles and gloves will be a good idea. Airsoft is not a very safe sport, and you should be careful to keep arms and legs covered. Don’t play where other people might become caught up. It is easy to get carried away, and strangers might not approve of your games. Gas guns are vulnerable to heat. Never put a gas gun near a heat source.
