How to mend your surfboard

From ArticleWorld

Mending your surfboard can become a necessity if you use the board regularly. Basic ding mending isn’t difficult, and can save you money (so you can spend it on accessories). Sometimes, it can mean that you don’t have to splash out on a new board every summer.

Mending

Prop the board upwards, and make sure that it is level.

Make sure that that board is clean, and remove any additions that aren’t fixed to the foam.

You will need to sand down the ding with 160 grit sandpaper. You should have a sanded area about 2 inches around the ding. This makes the surface rough, so that the resin you use can find something to hold onto.

Take a piece of fibreglass cloth, and cut a shape about twice the size of the ding.

Mix some resin (buy some from a surfboarding site, or ask your friends to recommend a brand), with a catalyst, and pour it into the ding. Be sure not to apply the resin too thickly, as it will be pressed out the sides when you add the cloth.

Put the fibreglass cloth over the resin, and press firmly to ensure contact.

When the resin is dry, sand the cloth down until it is smooth, and all of a line with the rocker.

Add another layer of resin over the top (paint this on with a brush).

Hints

Make sure that you do not have resin seeping out of the sides when you apply the cloth. Wipe any away with a handy dishcloth.

Be sure that the first layer of resin is fully dry before sanding.

Make sure that the mend is lying even with the rest of the board.
