Fred and George Weasley

Fred and George Weasley are twins in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series of books. They were born on 1st April, 1978 to Arthur and Molly Weasley. Bill, Charlie and Percy are their elder brothers. They have two younger siblings, Ron and Ginny. All the Weasleys, including the twins have flaming red hair. They are good friends with Harry.

Fred and George are the school jokers and always upto tricks. They are seemingly uninterested in studies yet display a great skill in inventing magic tricks. They are in Gryffindor House and play as Beaters on the Quidditch team.

In the books

Fred and George provide useful help to Harry in ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ by aiding his escape from Privet Drive. They give Harry the Marauder’s Map in ‘Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban’, which proves to be extremely handy in various instances.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, Harry gave Fred and George his Triwizard winnings to start a joke shop. They had begun selling their own brand of joke itmes under the name “Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes” which they initially ran as a mail order service. Even Ludo Bagman, Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports at the Ministry of Magic, is impressed by their fake wands.

They play an interesting role in ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ and prove to be quite helpful. They distract Dolores Umbridge when Harry wanted to use the fire in her office to communicate with Sirius. They also joined the group called “Dumbledore’s Army” headed by Harry. Dolores Umbridge bans them from Quidditch and they decide to leave school but not before waging a full war on her. They let of a stream of fireworks on Umbridge’s first day as Headmistress and the school spends the day “in an advanced state of disruption”. They are caught when they create a “portable swamp” in the corridors. They depart on broomsticks and inform students of their new shop at Diagon Alley. They also promise discounts to all those who would use the products to cause mayhem under Umbridge’s nose.

In ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’, Fred and George are shown to be running a very successful joke shop, for which they are very thankful to Harry. They also care a lot about Ron, despite the fact they they made fun of him. This is clear at their visible distress when Ron was poisoned. Their mother was not in favor of the twins opening up a joke shop, but when she sees thie success, even she is impressed.
