Yaanbao

From ArticleWorld

Yaanbao is a type of Boabom, an ancient Tibetan martial art. The aim of Boabom is the optimization of health and to increase awareness of the body. Energy and vitality are also considered an important part of the equation. Proponents of the practice consider it a moving meditation and a system of active relaxation. While combat is not stressed, the technique can be used as a self defense should the need arise.

Because of the physical effort the art requires and the benefits to the respiratory system, it is considered by some to be an alternative medicine.

Teaching method

Both Boabom and Yaanbao are based on a progressive teaching method where there is a chain of movements increasing in complexity which students are required to master one step at a time. In Yaanbao which includes the use of different staffs each of which need to be studied separately, each step could take up to two years. During classes, no bodily contact is allowed as it is considered detrimental to the relaxation and meditation aspect of the art. Each staff is to become like an extension of the body and the student studies perfection of movement.

Schools

There is only one school in the United States where Baobom is taught and this is situated in Boston. It operates under the auspices of the Mmulargen School, an international organization of Baobom teachers.
