Rottweiler

From ArticleWorld

The Rottweiler is a dog breed originating from Germany. They are a powerful and healthy dog that is very intelligent. Often called ‘’Rotties’’ the breed has, in recent years, gotten a bad reputation as a vicious dog. This is primarily due to a lack of knowledge on the part of the owner and/or unsavory breeders intentionally producing dogs with aggressive natures.

History

The Rottweiler is an ancient breed of dog with a history that dates back to the Roman Empire. The Roman armies traveled with their cattle for food and used working dogs to help with the herd. The breed gets their name from the German town of Rottweil, which was on one of the many routes the Roman took. This area became an important cattle region as time passed and it was here the Roman Cattle dogs proved their worth by protecting the herd from robbers and animals. The breed eventually fell so far into decline that by the year 1900, in the town of Rottweil, there was only one female of the breed. With the onset of World War I creating the need for powerful, intelligent and well-heeled dogs for police and guard duty, interest in the breed was revived.

Characteristics

Rottweilers learn very quickly and have a deep desire to please their owners. They are very intelligent and require a good degree of mental stimulation or they may develop undesirable habits. Rotties are generally a calm breed of dog, however they are also very playful and tend to get excited at the first sign of playtime. Good training and early socialization are recommended for all Rottweilers and will result in a loving pet that is good with children. This breed requires an owner that is experienced with obedience training and can give the dog a great deal of exercise.
