An oatcake is a cracker that is created out of oatmeal and sometimes oatcakes have flour in them too. An oatcake is cooked on a griddle just like a pancake. Americans may know the oatcake by the more familiar name of Johnnycake which is created out of cornmeal and is cooked on a board or shovel. The Johnnycake is cooked just the way the Scots cooked them over 300 years ago.

Scottish oatcakes

Oatcakes have long been considered to be the national bread of Scotland. And, it has been that way for many centuries. They were even baked by the Romans in Scotland. They are made almost entirely made out of oats and it is the only cereal to flourish in northern Scotland. Each community had its own mill to grind its own oats. So that oatmeal could be given to each household. The oats were a part of the Highlanders’ staple diet of porridge and oatcakes. Today, many brands of oatcakes are available commercially. The most famous brand of oatcakes is Walkers oatcakes.

Another type of oatcake

A North Staffordshire oatcake is a type of pancake made out of oatmeal, flour, and yeast. They are also cooked on griddle. Oatcakes can be stuffed with bacon, cheese, sausage, and eggs. They can be reheated by being fried in butter or by grilling. Oatcakes can also be pre cooked if needed.
