Nokia Corporation is a telecommunications equipment manufacturer with its head office located in Finland. Nokia is most widely known for its popular range of mobile phones and the infrastructure that it provides for telecommunication services. The company mainly produces equipment for voice over IP, wireless LAN, broadband services and ISDN.

History of Nokia

The company was established in 1865 by Knut Fredrik Idestam, a Finland-Swede. It began as a wood-pulp mill based on the banks of the Nokia rapids. After the First World War, a company called Finnish Rubber Works acquired Nokia Wood Mills along with Finnish Cable Works, a producer of telephone and telegraph cables. Nokia was a leading manufacturer of boots for the military. The three companies merged to form the Nokia Corporation in 1967.

With the advent of electronics and integrated circuit technology during the 1970s, Nokia became more involved in the telecommunications manufacturing industry. As time passed Nokia began to offer a series of personal computers called MikroMikko. However these operations became a part of the Fujitsu Company. The 1990s and the new century saw the company taking to streamlining practices with actions like organizational restructuring and layoffs.

Nokia today

Nokia is known to be a progressive organization spending millions of dollars every year on research and development. The company has a very commendable culture of speed and flexibility of decision making. It has a total of 56,000 employees and earns revenue of over €34.191 billion ($42.61 billion).
