National dish

From ArticleWorld

A national dish revolves around a particular food, dish, or drink of a country, region, or nation. It is usually something that is made in that country or that was made popular in that country. The concept of a national dish is informal and vague. And, there is no real relationship between a country’s people and the dish that is represented by a country. National dishes can vary from region to region. Sometimes there can be different national dishes in different parts of the same country. For example, rosti is the national dish in the German speaking part of Switzerland and fondue is the national dish in French speaking part of Switzerland. Drinks can also be labeled as a national dish such as beer in Germany, wine in France, and vodka in Poland and Russia. National dishes also function as stereotypes. While most national dish stereotypes are either positive or neutral; they can also get the status of ethnic slurs. For example, sauerkraut continues to be viewed as the German national dish because the word kraut is use as a pejorative term for German people. This is even after sauerkraut became used less as a part of German cuisine. In addition, French people are said to love frog legs even though the dish is not very common or popular in France. The French people are also referred to as frogs in English. Sometimes a national dish can become an urban legend. For example, the popularity of eating dogs in both Korea and China are overestimated in the West. Urban legend national dishes can also become self-fulfilling prophecy such as the Scottish deep fried Mars bar which became popular only it was rumored to exist.
