Melrose Place

From ArticleWorld

Melrose Place was a long-running evening soap opera on Fox. The television show captured an audience across the world. Melrose Place is now syndicated on SOAPnet.

History

Melrose Place was created by Darren Star and first aired in 1992. The show was an offshoot of Beverly Hills 90210, but it did not feature any crossover characters on the regular basis.

The drama of Melrose Place took place in a flashy apartment community in the West Hollywood area of Los Angles. However, the combination of money, power, and beauty did not draw in viewers in the beginning. Late in the first season, the show took on more outlandish storylines and introduced Amanda Woodward (Heather Locklear) and ratings rose by the millions.

In 1994, Melrose Place produced its own spin-off, Models, Inc. The show was cancelled after one season due to low ratings.

In 1999, Melrose Place had a similar fate and was cancelled for high production costs and declining ratings.

Throughout its seven years on the air, Melrose Place introduced a revolving door of characters. The show skyrocketed the careers of Marcia Cross and Courtney Thorne-Smith and recharged the careers of Locklear, who was originally made famous in Dallas, and Alyssa Milano, the daughter in Who’s the Boss.

In 2005, Paramount Studios announced that they would be releasing the 227 episodes of Melrose Place on DVD starting in the summer of 2006.
