Who shaves

  • Women. Leg shaving is common among women in Western countries. The standard that leg hair on women was unattractive began during the 20th century when a woman’s legs became more visible due to shorter skirts. The refusal to shave one’s legs is often associated with feminism. Women typically begin shaving their legs at puberty.
  • Men. It is also practiced by some men, most often swimmers (to reduce friction in water) and cyclists (to ease injury cleanup in the case of a fall and to help in the treatment of road rash). Male models or fitness competitors may shave to better show off their muscles. In some circles, it is seen as an unmanly beauty procedure that is primarily done by homosexuals.

Other processes

Individuals may use other methods of hair removal, including waxing, depilatories, epilation, sugaring and lasers.

All of these methods, including leg shaving, are also commonly used on the armpit and pubic hair to varying degrees.

Myths

Some people believe that once someone shaves an area, the hair grows back more thickly. This, however, is a myth. The hair seems thicker since the ends have been removed roughly, leaving stubble.

Procedure

Leg shaving can be accomplished using either an electric or manual razor. A shaving cream is suggested in order to prevent razor burn.

Leg shaving is most common among women in Australia, Western Europe and North America. It is so common, in fact, that in these countries, the term “hairy” is often associated with fetish or pornographic Web sites.
