How to wax a curb or rail for skateboard use

From ArticleWorld

Why would anyone want to wax a curb or rail? Well, skateboarders often use those areas for boarding tricks, and when the curb gets dented, or the rail develops rust, this can bring a board back down to Earth. So everyone needs a trusty pot of wax.

Method

  • Buy some wax. Don’t worry too much about the origins of the wax, or the type, just any old wax will do. Although there are specialist skateboard waxes out there, they aren’t necessary.
  • Take your wax to the spot, and start rubbing it in as hard as you can – it should start to form large lumps around the edge, an event known as ‘caking’. Don’t just wipe the wax around the hole, cover it and the sides.
  • Now you have covered the hole, you need to use your skateboard to wear down the surface. It might be a little sticky, but once you have worn it down, have a better look, and see if the surface needs more wax. Add some if it does.

Hints

  • If you really can’t get a pot of wax, use a candle. You’ll probably find that a normal, supermarket candle is best: beeswax candles are expensive and have a higher melting point.
  • Make sure that you keep the surface level. The whole purpose of this waxing was to make things nice and smooth, so that’s what you should aim for.
  • Be sure that you are not going to offend anyone, make it dangerous for people who aren’t skateboarders (like OAPs, for example). Also make sure that you are not breaking any laws by waxing the surface.
  • The next time that you skate past, be extra careful. Wear you protective clothing (that’s what it’s for), and watch out for any lumps and bumps that have accidentally been made in the wax.
