How to get a prenuptial agreement

From ArticleWorld

To get a prenuptial agreement and to ask your beloved to sign on the dotted line may seem like the end of romance but with about one in three of all first marriages ending in divorce, a prenuptial agreement is smart financial planning. Along with being an emotional and physical union a marriage is also a financial union and a prenupe looks after the financial aspect of this alliance. It is a contract between the two people getting married about how assets will be divided in the event of death or divorce. Asking each other serious questions about how you see finances in the marriage partnership may save you pain and money later - and might even save your marriage. Here are some guidelines to help you draft a perfect legal document.

A few suggestions

  1. Remember you are not the only one who thinks that the idea of a prenuptial agreement is gross, most of us have balked at the very idea when it was first brought up.
  2. The best is to bring up the conversation early in the relationship at a time and place where both you and your partner feel open, at ease and not pressured. Do it where both of you are most comfortable- mentally and physically.
  3. Next, go through prenuptial agreements on the internet or research the local library and then draft a document that seems to say it all for both of you.
  4. Ask a lawyer to make the final draft of the agreement.

Do’s

  • Include your partner in the search and the drafting of the document right from the beginning.
  • Take as much time as you would need to talk about it but get all the little matters sorted out right at the beginning.

Don’ts

  • If it is your partner who has suggested the agreement, do not get suspicious of their motives.
  • Don’t consider the prenuptial as a bad omen to the start of the marriage.
