How to create a startup disk on Windows 95, 98 or Me

From ArticleWorld

On some occasions (namely when your computer fails to boot normally from the hard disk, or when you do not want it to boot from the hard disk), you will need a boot floppy disk (also called startup disk). On Windows 95, 98 and Me, you can create a boot disk by following these steps:

  1. Insert a floppy disk into your computer's floppy drive. The floppy disk need not be formatted, but it must be in a working state.
  2. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icons. A new window will pop up.
  4. In the upper part of the new window, find the tab labeled "Startup Disk". Choose it, and click the "Create Disk" button. Windows will now format the disk if necessary, and copy the relevant files on it. It may also ask you to insert the installation CD, if required.

Notes

Make sure that you do not have any important data on the floppy disk. The data will get overwritten.

If the disk is write protected, you can still use it by covering the square hole in its corner. Normally, you can do so using the switch there. If the switch is locked though, covering the hole with some tape should do.
