How to check your hard disk space

From ArticleWorld

As you use your computer, the space on your hard disk gradually fills up. There are times when you will want to check how much space there is left on a drive, either because you want to install some new software and want to know how much space you have at disposal, or just because you are curious. Here is how to do it.

Steps

  1. Click the Start button and choose My Computer.
  2. In the list that appears, right-click on the icon that represents the drive. This is usually labeled "Hard Disk" or "C:". If you see more letters, there is nothing wrong. It simply means you hard drive has more partitions.
  3. Right-click on the partition or disk about which you want to know how much space there is left, and go to "Properties"
  4. A new window will pop up. This window contains a chart and the actual numbers, describing how much space there is on your drive.

Notes

If you are confused about the units, you can use this:

  • 1 Gigabyte is 1,024 Megabytes.
  • 1 Megabyte is 1,024 Kilobytes.
  • 1 Kilobyte i 1,024 Bytes.
  • 1 Byte is 8 Bits

Some hard drive manufacturers "boost" their disk sizes by considering 1 Kilobyte to be equal to 1000 Bytes instead of 1024. Do note that this is not actually correct, and windows will report the size according to the rules here. If you wonder where they come from, just remember that computers use the binary and not the decimal system. Therefore, 1 Kilobyte is 2 raised at the power of 10 Bytes.
