This is a fun project for children of all ages.

Getting Started

  • The first thing that must be done is to find the perfect pumpkin. For this, it is recommended that you go to a farm. A fresh pumpkin will last longer than one that has been picked already. Choose a pumpkin that has a rich burnt orange color.

Carving

  • A sharp knife is needed; it is recommended that an adult be present to avoid any injuries. Children can give their creative opinions, but an adult should always do the carving. Special child safe carving sets are available at different stores that will allow children to carve their own pumpkins.
  • To cut the top off the pumpkin, stick the knife in the top of the pumpkin approx one inch from the edge. If you go any closer to the edge, you will cut through. Cut in a circle and lift the top off. Be careful to leave the stem intact.
  • Clean out all the seeds and save them for toasting later.
  • Carefully trace the facial feature that you want on your pumpkin.

A smaller knife will be required to do the intricate carving.

  • The most important part of carving your pumpkin is the mouth.

This will decide if you are going to have a happy pumpkin or a scary one.

  • When you are ready to put the candle in the pumpkin, choose a black one. It will add to the Halloween spirit.

Find the perfect place

  • Place the pumpkin in the place where you want it, whether in a window or on the porch and light the candle. Place the cover of the pumpkin on top very carefully and viola! The perfect pumpkin.
