This novel follows Harry Potter in his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was published in 2003 and a film version of the novel is currently in production.

Opening scenes

Harry and his cousin, Dudley, are walking about their hometown of Little Whinging when Dementors attack Harry. He holds them off with a Patronus charm that he learned from Professor Lupin the year before but Dudley is hurt. Arabella Figg, a neighbor comes to the rescue and says that she was sent by Dumbledore to keep an eye on Harry. Immediately following Harry receives an expulsion letter from the Ministry of Magic stating that he is in danger of being expelled from Hogwarts for using underage magic and he must appear at a hearing to defend his case and hear his sentence.

Dumbledore’s Army (DA)

Harry leads the student in learning Defense Against the Dark Arts since Professor Umbridge refuses to teach it. The classes are held in secret and they name themselves the Defense Association but the name eventually changes to Dumbledore’s Army. They have decided to protect themselves learning the subject. Lord Voldemort is still on the loose and the Death Eaters are following him. The students feel it is in their best interest to learn all they can.

Final scenes

Towards the end of the novel, some of the DA gets into a battle with Death Eaters. Some of the older wizards show up to help with the fight but not before many are injured. Sirius Black dies at the hand of a Death Eater, Bellatrix Lestrange, and she escapes. Dumbledore fights Lord Voldemort who realizes he cannot win this fight and he, too, disappears. After the fight, Dumbledore explains the prophecy to Harry. Sixteen years ago, Sybill Trelawny prophesied that the Dark Lord (Voldemort) would approach and kill those who have defied him (James and Lily Potter). Voldemort will not be able to destroy the child (Harry) and will mark him as equal (having equal power). In the end, both cannot live and one must kill the other. In addition, Harry learns that he must stay with the Dursley’s each summer because Mrs. Dursley is Lily Potter’s sister. Since she is the last semblance of blood relation, Harry is protected from Voldemort as long as he visits the home once each year. The reason for this is Lily gave her life to protect her son and that shrouded him with protection.
