Flannel

From ArticleWorld

The Flannel is a piece of cloth that is mostly used to produce different clothing or bed sheets. Various compositions of the ending textile can be possible with wool, wool plus cotton or wool plus a form of synthetic fabric as the most popular. A second usage of the term is attributed directly to the actual clothing that is created from the fiber. In the United Kingdom, “flannel” is used to describe a small towel that is used to wash one’s body. The biggest advantage to wearing flannel is the fact that it offers high degrees of warmth. Its production is usually a two steps process:

  • First the flannel is woven and the obtained product is bleached, dyed and treated after it was napped once
  • The flannel is napped a second time.

History

Flannel has been used for hundreds of years. It was considered to be the fabric of woodsmen in the past with lumberjacks and farmers being also attributed as flannel wearers. As grunge music appeared in the North Eastern part of the United States of America, the fiber quickly became associated with the genre. This is because several singers wore clothing made from it and as time passed, wearing flannel became a fashion statement or an anti-fashion statement. Because of this it became associated with slackers as well.
