Fashion design is a discipline that can be studied in college. The first fashion designer who was more than a dressmaker was Charles Worth and he lived until he was 69 yeas old. Worth was able to tell his clients what to wear instead of looking to them for inspiration. He was also the first designer to be the symbol of a brand of clothes. The House of Worth remained in business after his death.

Early 20th century

Through the 1920s until the 1980s all high fashion was located in Paris. American and British fashion magazines sent many editors to all of the fashion shows in Paris and they bought clothes to copy in order to suit the wallets and lives of Americans

Post-war-fashion

The fashion houses relocated from Paris to New York after the war and that inspired some of Christian Dior’s fashions. The emergence of British fashions was the beginning of the end of French dominance as concerned fashion design. The 1960s also saw the beginning of the “street clothes design which came to be known as the punk rock look in clothing.

Modern design and designers

The modern fashion designs are put into two main categories which are haute couture and ready to wear clothing. In order to qualify as an haute couture house a designer or company must belong to the Syndical Chamber for haute couture. The Haute Couture houses must have two shows a year with at least thirty five outfits in each show. Ready to wear clothes are not custom made. Therefore, ready to wear clothes are produced on a larger scale for many people to purchase.
