Engineering research

From ArticleWorld

The domain of engineering research aims to bring about enhancements in both the theory and the practice of fields various like high-speed and real-time computing, earthquake engineering, power systems engineering and construction.

Engineering research also focuses largely on military related developments. A major breakthrough in the field of military technology has been its adaptation to civilian life. Among the several examples of this include the use of radars for civil aviation, the GPS satellite network, fiber optic technology and lasers.

Engineering research – How it has made it a difference to lives

There has been considerable investment in fundamental scientific and engineering research by a number of countries across the globe, especially the more industrialized nations. Technological advancements that happen in the elite campuses of technological institutes contribute a great deal in nation building, the enhancement of the quality of living and the boosting of national security.

Apart from vast improvements in the fields of manufacturing, transport systems, telecommunications technology and health care, there have been great leaps in defense technology. A prime example of this is the United States military, which has been decisive in recent wars thanks to far-superior technology such as stealth aircraft, laser-guided weaponry and precision guidance missile technology.

Engineering research and convergence

The recent decades have seen the increasing convergence of major technological and engineering fields of study that especially include computers, electronics and telecommunication. Areas like civil engineering, environmental studies, water management and geology also have benefited greatly from the phenomenon of convergence.

With this fact in mind, it has become incumbent upon the various departments of a university or research institute involved in engineering research to work in conjunction with each other so as to achieve their objectives.
