Egyptian Mau

From ArticleWorld

The Egyptian Mau is the only naturally occurring breed of spotted domestic cat. A shaved Mau not only has spotted hair, it also has spots on its skin.

History

With a long history, the Egyptian Mau has been identified in ancient Egyptian artwork, religion and mythology. Not recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association until 1977, the cat was first introduced to North America in 1956 by the exiled Russian princess, Nathalie Troubetskoy.

Characteristics

The fastest breed of domestic cat, the Egyptian Mau can run at speeds up to 36 mph. Longer back legs and a loose flap of skin, similar to that of a Cheetah, account for their amazing speed. Maus are very sensitive to temperature, preferring a warm climate. They are also known to be more sensitive to medications and anesthesia than other cats. They have distinct voices and are said to chirp and make other unusual noises. Happy Maus often move their back legs up and down in a motion that resembles a cat marking its territory. Only three colors of Egyptian Mau are eligible for showing, silver, smoke and bronze. Black and blue Maus may not be shown, but may be used in breeding. All Maus have green eyes. The Mau is very intelligent and fiercely loyal. It is moderately active, has tons of personality, and makes a wonderful pet.
