Debian GNU/Hurd

From ArticleWorld

Debian GNU/Hurd is a distribution based on the GNU/Hurd kernel (the GNU operating system). It is developed by the Debian Project, as much of the software that runs on Debian GNU/Linux has been ported to Hurd.

Popularity

Although Hurd is one of the oldest GNU projects, it is often considered to be one of the most sound failures of the GNU project. Hurd has been in development for more than ten years, but it is still not considered to be ready for production use. and has not been officially released. In fact, the project's homepage itself warns that Hurd is still in development and there is still much work left to be done until it can be safely used.

Therefore, Debian GNU/Hurd is not a flagship of Debian. GNU/Hurd is not too popular or too widely used, but, at the moment, it is a quite solid Hurd distribution. A live CD is available, and the distribution can also be installed on a hard drive. The range of available packages is quite wide, meaning that a Hurd enthusiast can probably use his computer without much trouble.

At the time of writing, Debian GNU/Hurd had not released any CD and/or DVD images since October 26th, 2005, but development was still active.
