Cycle of abuse

From ArticleWorld

Violence seems to surround us and we get to notice violent actions all around us. When talking about psychology you should know that violence is considered to be an action that will eventually repeat itself. Basically, if violence occurs in a relationship then it will happen again. Studies have found some similar actions in most cases. We can say that an abuse pattern is developed. A theory has been created that analyzes the repeating of some phases in domestic violence. It has been called “Cycle of Abuse” and in the next paragraph we are going to analyze what happens according to the theory.

In the beginning there is a constant rising of tension. Eventually it can manifest itself in small acts of violence without serious damage being done. After some time these high tension situations will turn in physical activity. This means that one person will get wounded. Unfortunately in some cases we will notice severe wounds caused by weapons or sexual violence being experimented. Also, in such a situation the victim can do nothing about it because only in rare occasions there is a witness. With lack of an eye witness and the fear one may experience nothing will be done. After the violent act is done a new phase takes place. The aggressive party will apologize and the two will “shake hands”. Everything will be beautiful in the relationship until one day it all starts from the beginning. This is how a cylce is created that follows the same pattern all the time.

Eventually the wounds will become more and more serious and the victim will need hospitalization. Sometimes even death can happen. The only real way to keep the pattern repeating itself refers to the victim. He/She has to get detached and talk about it or take action. This means going to the authorities or to a close friend that can offer good advice.

This abuse pattern theory has been largely publicized and addressed by the media on several occasions. Problems rose with it because of what is considered faulty generalization. Basically speaking you can not say that this will happen in all cases although the vast majority will confirm the pattern. Even the state is considered guilty of inappropriate intervention in some situations because of generalization. Thoughts exists concerning similarity in domestic violence cases but no real proof of a 100% real pattern has been found.
