The Confederate States of America was founded in 1861 after the Southern states seceded from the United States of America. The Confederate States of America was defeated in the American Civil War and rejoined the United States in 1865.

Geography

During its existence, the Confederate States of America included Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. It also included the Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma), New Mexico Territory (which incorporated parts of present-day New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada), and Arizona Territory (which incorporated part of present-day New Mexico and Arizona).

The Confederate States of America included nearly 3,000 miles of coastline, covering the Gulf of Mexico and part of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Confederates States of America designated Richmond, Virginia as its capital.

American Civil War

The states that seceded the North believed heavily in that rights of states and disliked a strong, central government. Their economies relied largely upon farming and the institution of slavery. The states’ rights issues and slavery were key issues in the American Civil War.

U.S. President Abraham Lincoln sought to rejoin the torn nation and rallied troops for the lengthy and bloody war. The government of the Confederate States of America, including President Jefferson Davis quickly established a military and fired the first shots at Fort Sumter in South Carolina.

The Confederate troops suffered constant manpower shortages and eventually offered freedom to blacks who volunteered to fight for the Confederacy.

Ultimately, the Confederate States of America was defeated in 1865, General Robert E. Lee and all remaining troops surrendered and Davis was captured.

More than 600,000 people died in the American Civil War, an disproportion 250,000 from the Confederacy, whose military boasted only about an estimated one million men.

All the seceded states were readmitted by 1870.
