Cola

From ArticleWorld

Cola or soft drink or carbonated drink has been defined by the Soft Drinks Regulations as ‘any sweetened carbonated water whether flavored or unflavored’. Under European law a soft drink is defined as ‘non-alcoholic, water based, flavored drink’. The vagueness of the various definitions provide the big cola manufacturing companies with an opportunity to innovate and provide drinks that meet consumer demand. The term cola is said to be derived from kola nuts that were initially used to caffeinate colas.

Ingredients

A standard bottle of cola is optionally sweetened, acidulated and carbonated and may contain any or all of the following – fruit, fruit juice, coloring and other salts. About 86% of any carbonated drink is water. Preservatives are usually not required because the presence of carbon dioxide helps to inhibit the growth of moulds and yeasts - which is normally what preservatives accomplish.

Kinds

Carbonated drinks are generally divided into the following kinds:

  1. Regular: These carbonated drinks are made using regular sugar as the sweetening agent;

  4. Mixers: These carbonated drinks are generally used as additives to alcoholic drinks; and,
