Coach (baseball)

Coaches help the players adjust to their environment. Because, in baseball, players take on both offensive and defensive roles, good management is needed. The head coach, or manager, of a baseball team has the main job of decides a game’s line up, player substitution and general looks over the needs of his team. Since the job of the manager is so vast, he often relies on others for help.

Base coach

There are two base coaches in baseball. The first base coach is positioned near first base and has the job of determining if the runner can advance past first base onto second. The third base coach has the job of determining whether a runner can advance safely to home plate and score a run.

Pitching, bullpen and catching coaches

While the pitching coach is responsible for the pitching of all of his staff, he employs the help of the bullpen coach who, in turn, takes on the responsibility of working with relief pitchers. During a game, the pitching coach will sit on the bench with the manager while the bullpen coach will stay in the bullpen helping with the back up pitchers. The catching coach, or catching instructor, works directs a team’s catchers.

Bench coach

A bench coach is new to baseball. The job of the bench coach is to organize the team in that he will set practice times, set practice routine, regulate warm-up and monitor progress of those on the injured list. During the game, the bench coach takes on the role of assistant manager and often will assist in the major decisions of a game.
