Claridge's

From ArticleWorld

Claridge’s, a five star hotel, located in the center of Mayfair, is one of the most popular and well known hotels of London. Claridge’s is situated in the West End of London, within a few minutes walking distance from Bond Street underground station. Regent Street, Berkley Square, Grosvenor Square, Hyde Park and South Molton Street shopping areas are also within its striking distance. Patronized by royalty, Claridge’s has a class of its own and is the only hotel in London to be awarded the Imperial Mark.

Humble beginning

In the year 1812, Claridge’s started its life as Mivart’s Hotel, an insignificant place in unassuming surroundings. With the passage of years, business grew and Mivart’s expanded to include neighboring houses. It was christened Claridge’s when the ownership changed hands in 1854. The hotel grew from strength to strength especially because it boasted a royal clientele and was also frequented by foreign aristocracy.

The ownership changed hands again in 1894 and this time the new owners made drastic renovations to put in lifts and adjoining bathrooms. It was given another face lift in the 1930s to put in Art Deco transformations.

The Reason behind the rise

Claridge's is supported by the royalty of all Countries, and after WW-I, aristocrats who did not choose to maintain an establishment in London preferred to stay at Claridge’s. Now, of course it becomes a matter of prestige to stay, dine and be seen at the Claridge’s. The most influential and the most successful people of this world come to Claridge’s to enjoy its celebrated service and bask in the warmth of the tastefully done front hall.

Despite the fact that Claridge’s is top notch, its attitude remains old fashioned. The staff is flawlessly groomed and traditionally dressed, and everyone from the waiter to the doorman to the footman treats the guests with a deference that elsewhere is generally accorded to only the regulars.
