Chihuahua (dog)

From ArticleWorld

The Chihuahua is the smallest recognized dog breed. Known for their small size and large ears these dogs are easily recognized. They come in many colors as well as short and longhaired types. According to the AKC the Chihuahua should weigh no more than six pounds.

History

Chihuahuas are the oldest breed in North America and are thought to be the descendants of the Techichi breed, a slightly larger version of today’s Chihuahua. The Techichi breed was desired among the royalty of the ancient Aztec.

Characteristics

Devoted and loyal, Chihuahuas can at times become jealous of their owners human relationships. Chihuahuas have a life span often exceeding 15 years and make loving companions in a variety of environments, including small apartments. Because of their size and frailty they are not ideal pets for small children. Alert, curious and intelligent, Chihuahuas enjoy being outdoors. Constant supervision is required when they are outside as they can often be confused with prey by larger predators such as bigger dogs, coyotes and even hawks. Keeping them on a leash is recommended to protect the dogs from getting themselves into trouble as they are very brave and seem to have no concept of their own size. Chihuahuas also tend to be loyal to their breed, preferring the company of other Chihuahuas as opposed to other dog breeds. Male Chihuahuas may be particularly hard to house break if they are left un-neutered.

Health

Common health conditions are patella luxation, seizure disorders and eye infections. Chihuahuas require veterinary care for birthing and dental conditions. The mini, toy or tea cup types are not terms used by reputable breeders or kennel clubs. These dogs are actually runts and carry a wide variety of health problems due to dwarfing. Dwarfed Chihuahuas also have a greatly reduced lifespan.
