Chai is the Hindi word for tea. Chai tea which is spiced tea is very popular in the United States. Chai is also the standard term for tea in many languages such as Arabic and Turkish, in addition to Persian. Various forms of tea are available in India. India is famous for its spiced teas and a spice mixture of chai marsala. In India, Marsala chai is more popular than regular tea because both Indian cuisine and most Indian drinks are a bit spicy. It is also a very popular in coffee houses around the world. In addition, chai is popular at some of the musical festivals especially at the European music festivals. The origin of the chai marsala recipe is not known but the recipe is thought to have come from Britain.

Preparation of chai

There is no specific or fixed way to make marsela chai and there are many different varieties of this in Indian families. Chai is a classification of tea not a type of tea. However, each cup of chai has four main ingredients. These ingredients are:

  • Tea: This is usually black
  • Sweetener: This can be plain white sugar but honey or molasses can be as well.
  • Milk: Any type of milk can be used and any other creamers.
  • Spices: Chai can have cinnamon, ginger, peppercorn, cloves, nutmeg, chocolate, and many other spices such as vanilla. Usually chai is made by boiling water with the sugar and spices all ready in the water. Then, the tea is added along with milk or cream.
