A War may be defined as a conflict between the armed forces of two or more states or coalitions. A state of incompatibility or disagreement may exist between two oppositions, the consequence of which is a war. Warfare may be defined as the conduct of war. Widespread conflict between two or more groups within a country is known as a civil war, eg. the American Civil War. War waged by a major power that does not itself participate may be termed as proxy war. Again, two major powers fighting proxy (indirect) wars are actually fighting a cold (direct) war.
