Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty that deals with the treatment of diseases involving the peripheral arteries and veins with the exception of cardiac vessels and intracranial vessels. Diseases of the arteries such as aortic aneurysms and various blockages of the arteries are treated by vascular surgery. In addition, diseases of the veins, such as varicose veins and venous malformations are surgically correctible with vascular surgery. Vascular surgeons also use devices such as carotid stents (tubes) and filters in the superior vena cava to treat vascular diseases in a minimally-invasive way.
