Sexual abstinence is the practice of deliberately choosing to refrain from some aspect of or all sexual activity. The term is often equated with “celibacy” and has several social, philosophical and religious implications. Certain religious practices or religious vows, as with a Catholic priest, include sexual abstinence as a part of the practice. Some religions believe that sexual abstinence is a virtue that harnesses the energy of the mind and body in order to achieve spiritual perfection.

Other people are sexually abstinent simply because they lack a sexual partner or have made the practice a routine part of their lifestyle. Programs teaching and promoting sexual abstinence to teens exist in response to the increased prevalence of sexually-transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy.
