The Fifa World Player of the Year award is an annual award given to a football player who is voted to be the best by his or her peers. A shortlist is selected by Fifa, which is reduced to a selection of 3, by a large group of football officials and personalities including players and managers from which the winner and runners up are selected. The awards for men first began in 1991 and for women in 2001, Frenchman Zinedine Zidane and Brazilian jointly hold the record having received the award 3 times each.
