Electrophoresis is the movement of charged particles, through a medium, under the influence of an electric field. This movement is explained by the Lorentz force which is the force exerted on the particle by the electric and magnetic fields. This principle has applications in molecular biology as is seen with gel electrophoresis. This is used to determine the size of some biomolecules. Electrophoresis can also be utilized in the separation of molecules that possess different charges and physical properties.
