From ArticleWorld

Denial-of-service (DoS) attacks are a type of computer network attack which aims to compromise a target's ability to provide a certain service. The effects may vary, from simply crashing an application that receives remote connections, to crashing the entire operating system of the target or damaging its software infrastructure.

Some DoS attacks may not even be intentional. Regardless of the attacker's intention, this category deals with conditions that may expose DoS-like behavior.
