Comets are small objects that are in the solar system that orbit the Sun. They characteristically possess a tail or coma that is caused by the solar radiation on the comet's nucleus. Comets are in actuality minor planets made of rock, dust and ices. On approaching major planets the orbit of the comets are often greatly affected. They can be moved into an orbit close to the Sun causing their destruction or may be diverted out of the solar system.
