The types and varieties of cats being bred around the world are many. They are generally categorized by breed (traditional, rare and new), or by appearance (long hair, short hair or with unusual physical features). Traditional breeds have long histories, rare breeds have their own registries and new breeds are those still under development. Long and semi-long haired cats are grouped together, distinguishing them from short or hairless breeds. Breeds with unusual physical features may include long hairs or hairless cats, but have an additional feature that makes them unique.
