Ayurvedic medicine is a comprehensive medical system that has roots more than 5,000 years old. This Indian medical practice is based on a holistic approach and revels in its role in early Hinduism. Ayurveda also has a tradition of surgery. Practitioners study eight basic branches, which cover most conventional medical processes. Many practitioners say that the essence of Ayurveda is the knowledge and awareness of the qualities of nature; by understanding these qualities, one gains an appreciation of their effects on individuals.
