From ArticleWorld

Applied sciences refer to the study and application of knowledge from particular scientific fields to solve practical problems. As opposed to pure science, applied science is a systematic way of taking advantage of established scientific theories and facts. This leads to further research and development, giving rise to new technology. Several fields, which otherwise would have had mere academic importance, can be considered to be applied sciences as a result of this approach. These fields include agriculture, community service, engineering, journalism, defence technology and mass media.
