Antidotes are chemical or biochemical agents that counteract the affects of poisons, toxins, medications and venoms. Antidotes work in various ways. Some are simply safer molecules that compete for receptor sites that poisons bind to, thus reducing their effect. Others directly bind up the toxic substance. Chelation of metals involves this type of antidote. Antibodies that bind and facilitate the destruction of some toxins or venoms can also be effective antidotes. There are multiple antidotes for medications that are taken in excess such as during an overdose situation.
