Casting (performing arts)

When talking about the performance arts, casting is the process through which the actors, dancers, singers, and other talents are selected to perform in a show or film. This can be done in numerous ways but an audition is usually necessary, especially in theatre.

Acting audition

A normal audition is very simple. In most cases it refers to a part in a play, although there might be auditions for other positions needed in putting on a show such as for the director's seat. A simple audition starts with enlisting. Those that desire the part will make this known and will prepare. In some cases there will be something specific to do while auditioning (like a part of the text to be acted) or, the one that is commanding the auditions might allow freedom. There are several instances in which the actor will be allowed to act the desired part and based on that a new one can be asked for or not.

Movie audition

There is a well known fact that a theatre actor may not be as good in a movie. This is because there are different needs and in film producing, technology helps a lot more. While in theatres you will need acting skills, in movies you will also need looks, charisma and basically looking good for the role. A movie audition starts of with filming the one that auditions for the part. There is usually one body area that will be emphasized on like the face or upper body for instance. After reviewing the filmed material a decision concerning who gets the part will be done.

Casting calls

Depending on the production there are different types of people that can be researched in casting. In community theatres there will be a public invitation for anyone to audition while in movies and bigger theatre shows there will be a need to show that you had acting lessons of some sort. You can also call out one better known actor for a part you might think was great for him. For instance you can offer the part directly to someone, he might decline it or not. In such a case there will be no need for an audition.

When we are talking about a major production there will be a need of many actors or performers. In occasions we can even talk about thousands of people. This is why there will be a need of a casting director. He will be the one responsible with everything around casting.
