Similar terminology

A bikini wax is similar to the Brazilian wax, which removes all – or nearly all – of the hair from a woman’s pubic region.

Why waxing works

Since waxing removes hair at the root, it prevents new hairs from growing back for some time. This time period can range from three to eight weeks. The hair that initially grows back is typically soft and fine.

Process

A thin layer of wax (usually hot, but not hot enough to burn the skin – although cold wax can also be used) is spread over the skin in the pubic region. A paper or cloth strip is pressed over the top of the wax. It is removed in the opposite direction of hair growth by ripping.

A great deal of pain is involved in this process and many experts suggest taking Advil an hour before a bikini wax appointment.

Pros and cons

Waxing is considered beneficial because it is a long lasting hair removal process and because the appearance is smoother – stubble is never felt.

However, drawbacks to take into consideration are the pain involved (although this is typically short lasting), the expense, the fact that the removal process is not permanent and that it may eventually cause hair follicles to grow in different directions, eventually making hair growth more noticeable.

People who should not wax

Some experts advise individuals who suffer from diabetes or have poor circulation or varicose veins since that makes them ore susceptible to infection. Also those who use Retin-A, Renova, Differin or Isotretinoin since these medications allow skin to weaken and could result in tearing of the skin.
