A hairstylist moves to Atlanta to give her daughter the chance to attend a top music school. She’s employed by a manipulative boss at a new salon, and decides to leave. When she opens her own shop, she encounters new obstacles and a comic range of characters, events, and her own flaws as an employer.

Plot

A skilled black hairstylist, Gina Morris(Queen Latifah)moves from Chicago to Atlanta so that her daughter can obtain a solid music education. In Atlanta, Gina takes a job in a salon owned by a gay boss(Kevin Bacon). But he is so oppressive that she leaves to open her own shop. But Gina likes to watch the pennies, and sava buck the best way she can.

She hires a new trainee with potential, Darnelle(Keshia Knight Pulliman) and a spunky stylist, Chanel(Golden Brooks) who drives everyone crazy with her high maintenance persona. A white hairstylist, Lynn(Alicia Silverstone)has adjustment issues because nobody black will sit in her chair. A electrician, Joe(Djimon Hounson)is hired to maintain the rundown condition of the shop.

The shop gets a lift from patrons such as football players wives, politicians and a few wealthy white ladies that Gina has solicited.

Resolution

There are continuous money challenges with the likelihood that the shop will be closed or bought out. Through all of the money matters, takeover attempts by jealous competitors, and possible insolvency, the business manages to chug along. Nothing is easy at the shop.

The theme is similar to the one developed in the Barbershop series.
