The Amur River which flows across the north eastern parts of Asia between the eastern parts of Russia and the Manchurian part of China is one of the longest rivers in the world. Its location is of political significance. The Heilongjiang province of China in the south and Amur Oblast region of Russian in the north derived their names from this river.

Origin and Course

The Amur River is 4,400 km long. It originates in the mountain ranges of north- eastern China and flows across diverse terrains of north east Asia. It empties into the Sea of Okhotsk.It flows between the far eastern region of Russian and Manchurian region of China. The Chinese region is called as the Inner Manchuria and the Russian region as the Outer Manchuria. The Amur proper river is 2,874 km long. It is formed by the union of the two rivers, Shilka, the tributary from the north and Argun, the tributary from the south. Shilka River arises from the slopes of Kente Moutain on its eastern side in Mongolia. Argun arises from the slopes of the Great Khingan range on its western side in the north east part of China.
