Adult education

Adult education is a growing trend. Many more adults are being trained to extend their knowledge in the workplace as well as many adults who did not finish high school are returning to programs that cater to adults with life experience.

GED

Many high school dropouts are enrolling in programs that help individuals complete the general education requirements needs for a high school diploma. Currently, many companies require a high school diploma for employment. Those that have dropped out of school before receiving their diplomas are offered a second chance to complete their education by studying, taking classes and preparing for the General Education Development (GED) test. The GED is equivalent to receiving a high school diploma.

ESL/ESOL

Often immigrants move into an area where their native language isn’t the dominant language and it is difficult for these people to get jobs and thrive when they don’t understand what is being said. For these individuals programs such as English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and English as a Second Language (ESL) are offered. These classes give non-English speaking people the opportunity to learn English and successfully adapt to their new environments. These classes are offered as both adult education and general education.

Job training

Often employers want their employees to become better trained in an area of their job that need it. They will often send their employees to training programs located either in-house or at local colleges. For example, when computers became a way of life for most companies, many workers were unfamiliar with the new technology. They were then sent to computer training courses held either at the location of the job site or at local colleges and universities where the technology was booming.
